Profile

Zoi Karakinari, adjunct lecturer and tutor in landscape architecture in the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki from 2005 up to today, holds a Diploma in Architecture from AUTh, a Master and a PhD in Landscape Architecture from Joint Postgraduate Programs AUTh. As a freelance architect, she practices architecture since 2001 and landscape architecture since 2005 with projects in Greece and abroad. Her practice strongly refers and relates to sustainable architecture and landscape design based on “topos” identity.

She has contributed with her work at many offices and studios, including the architectural office of Mary Ananiadou-Tzimopoulou, an award winning office which is specialized in landscape architecture studies, the Agoutoglou office with architectural studies and realized work, the Inbo Architectural Office in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, with architectural studies and accomplished work, and the KUIPER-OOSTERHEERT-WUBBEN Architectural and Urban Office, in the Netherlands, dealing with residential developments and urban redevelopment.

Scientifically, she has worked supporting technically twelve research programs in AUTh focused in landscape architecture, urban and rural design, as well as cultural heritage, in order to redefine urban landscape icons, develop new strategies for “topos identity”, upgrade and establish a transdisciplinary open green space syntax. Her work and papers are published in scientific journals, conference proceedings and exhibitions’ catalogues.

Furthermore, she has participated and awarded in several national and European architectural and urban design competitions (2 awards, 1 distinction). She has also participated in many PanHellenic and international exhibitions and workshops, either with her projects (4th European Biennial of Landscape Architecture, CULTURE 2000- European Cultural Program, School of Architecture AUTh) or as scientific/ organizational committee (School of Architecture AUTh, HotHouse 3 – Urmadic University, CULTURE 2000, Environmental Council of AUTh).

It was in collaboration with Chrysa Polizou, in the framework of the B Section of Architectural and Urban Planning of the Architecture Department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, supervised by Professor M. Ananiadou – Tzimopoulou and Associate Professor G. Zoidis.

The two year Post-Graduate programme in Landscape Architecture (MLA), is the first of its kind to be offered in Greece. It has been running at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki since 2003, as an Interdepartmental Programme of Post-Graduate Studies involving the School of Architecture, Faculty of Technology, and the School of Agriculture, Faculty of Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Environment, with the administrative support of the School of Architecture, Faculty of Technology AUTh. Postgraduate studies were held there, as a scholar of IKY (State Scholarship Foundation).

The Master Thesis was titled “Wetland Landscapes of West Coastal Thessaloniki. Protection, Promotion. Landscape Architecture Study for the Delta of the Gallikos River, the Kalohori Lagoon and the Dendropotamos Stream”. Supervisors were Professor M. Ananiadou-Tzimopoulou and Special Advisor on wetlands, Professor S. Tsiouris.

The PhD thesis was developed in the Interdisciplinary Program of Postgraduate Studies in Landscape Architecture of the Architecture Department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki as a scholar of IKY (State Scholarship Foundation).

The subject was “Urban Wetlands. Landscape Design” with supervisor Professor M. Ananiadou-Tzimopoulou.
